Dear
Birthparents,
Choosing adoption is an amazing, self-less gift
to your child. We admire your maturity and your
courage; both evident in your decision for
adoption. Thank you for considering our family
to join you on this journey.
We feel adoption is a
wonderfully noble journey for both birth parents
and adoptive parents. It is something we have
always considered for our family. The
possibility of an open adoption makes it all the
more exciting. We believe on-going contact with
you, as a birthparent, is essential for a
confident, well-adjusted child. Respecting the
level of openness and contact you desire is
important to us. This is our story.
We both grew up as farm kids, fully
involved in community and school activities.
Sara was raised on a dairy farm in the northern
metropolitan area of Minneapolis. Though the
farm has been sold, her parents still live in
the area. We visit them often and look forward
to being in the proximity of the “cities”, which
is what the Minneapolis – St. Paul area is
called, here in Minnesota. When visiting Sara’s
parents we take full advantage of the nearby
theaters, museums, and shopping venues. Sara’s
sister and brother-in-law also live in the area.
Erik grew up on a hog, turned vegetable
farm in central Minnesota. His parents still
live on and operate the farm. Erik takes every
opportunity to help out his dad and get his
“farming fix”. Erik has a twin brother, who now
lives with his family in the Minneapolis
suburbs.
We met during our freshman year
of college at the University of Minnesota. Go
Gophers! We were first introduced by our
roommates – who also later married! Erik’s
college roommate happened to be his twin
brother! So, one of Sara’s dearest friends and
college roommate is now our beloved
sister-in-law! We value our family and spending
time with them is very important to us.
Our son, Henry, was born in 2005; he is
the light of our life! He is an intelligent and
beautiful boy who longs to be a big brother! Our
son, Gabriel, born in 2003, died before he had a
chance to live. We all miss him dearly.
In our 10 married years, Northern
Minnesota has been our home. Our 5-bedroom, 3.75
bath house sits on 7 acres of woods and native
prairie. The 90+ natural lakes within 10 miles
of our house, the endless resorts and cabins in
the area, the miles of bike trails, and the
proximity to the headwaters of the Mississippi
river make the area in which we live a true
vacation destination. We love it here,
especially in the summer.
Northern Minnesota suits Erik
well. He is a nature/outdoor enthusiast. From
his choice of career, as a wildlife biologist,
through his hobbies it is evident he loves the
outdoors. He loves hunting/fishing, camping,
harvesting wild rice, and gardening. He also
loves to can and preserve produce from his
garden.
Sara is a high school science teacher. She
teaches earth and physical science to students
between 8th and 12th grade. She loves her
students, but especially likes the teaching
schedule. Having summers off gives her the
opportunity to spend additional time at home and
with family. Sara also enjoys reading, movies,
sporting events, and hanging out with friends.
As a family, we do a lot of camping, occasionally
just in our backyard, but often with family
friends. At home we take in an occasional movie
or theatre performance; we go for canoe trips
down the river, on bike rides, and fishing
trips. We also love to attend street festivals,
fairs, and parades. We make a yearly trek to
“The Great Minnesota Get Together”; the
Minnesota State Fair. We love it! Other favorite
family destinations include the beach, Lake
Superior, amusement parks, and indoor water
parks.
We spend essentially all of our spare time
together as a family. We love to take advantage
of life’s simple pleasures and try to give Henry
as many new experiences as possible. Besides the
things we have done as a family, Henry has taken
swimming lessons, t-ball, and ice skating
lessons. We plan on giving any child that joins
our family these same opportunities. Our goal is
to raise happy well-adjusted children that are
proud of themselves, their family, and are ready
to be productive members of society.
We wish you well on your journey through
adoption, especially as you make the additional
tough decisions ahead. Thank you for considering
our family to join you on this journey.
Best Wishes,
Erik & Sara |
