Peter and Barbara

Dear Expectant parents,

Hello!  We are Peter and Barbara.  We are so excited to be writing to you.  We feel like this is the most important letter we will ever write.  We are honored that you are taking the time to read about us.  We have so much we want to share with you.  Most importantly, please know that we think you are extraordinary for giving the gift of life to your unborn child.  Your strength and courage provides a waiting family like us with the chance to give a baby all the love in our hearts.    If chosen, we promise to provide a warm, fun, loving and happy home for your baby.   We welcome you with open arms and hope to build a long, lasting relationship together.

Peter and Barbara met while at college in upstate New York.  We started dating our senior year.  After graduation, Peter accepted a job with a global logistics company in Chicago.  He has been working with them for over 17 years.  Barbara moved out to Chicago almost a year later and accepted a job.   Three years later we were married!

We just celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary this year.  We are a loving, committed couple who support one another every step of the way.  We have been through some very difficult times together and as a result, we have grown stronger from each experience.

Peter and Barbara take every opportunity to be around family and to travel!  We have lots of family and friends spread out over the U.S. so we try to see them as much as possible.  We also love to get away to a warm, tropical destination every year.  Peter is an avid scuba diver and Barbara “bubble watches” with her snorkel.   A few of our favorite destinations are Belize, Mexico, Aruba, Virgin Islands, Honduras, and Grand Cayman. Most of our hobbies include being outdoors and working in the yard.  When the weather permits we love to take our dogs for a walk, ride bikes or read a good book on our patio.  We also enjoy catching up with friends, trying new restaurants, reading and watching movies together.   Peter is a Platoon Sergeant in the Army National Guard Reserve so one weekend a month he typically spends time training other soldiers in the field.  He is very passionate about serving his country and protecting his family and others.

One of toughest hurdles for Peter and Barbara was trying to have a family.  When Barbara was in high school she had many ovarian cysts that went undetected.  She was told early on in life that pregnancy would be very difficult for her.  She always knew in her heart that adoption would be a way her family was completed.  Miraculously, we were successful in getting pregnant and we were blessed with our son Max.  Barbara had many complications in her pregnancy and an extremely difficult delivery but in the end everything worked out.

We thank God every day for the life we have after Max but we knew it was time to pursue adoption for our next child.   We decided to adopt internationally.  When Max was three, his little sister Avery came home from South Korea.  The sun rises and sets with Avery.  Max loves her more than anything in the world.  Avery adores Max and looks up to him so much.  They are so close as friends and siblings.  Avery is very proud of her Korean heritage.  We celebrate her “gotcha day” every year!    Our friends, family and neighbors are always part of the celebration.  She’s an educator of adoption.  Avery knows that her birth mother loved her so much that she provided an adoption plan for her since she could not raise Avery herself.  She is very confident and comfortable about her adoption because she knows she is loved by not one but two mothers.  We write letters and send photos to Avery’s birth mother.  We are so proud to share everything we can about her amazing daughter.

When Avery was four and Max was six, we were notified that Peter’s army unit would be deployed to Afghanistan the following year.  This put any plans for adopting another baby on hold.  Peter returned home safely after a year of deployment.  It took us a good year to get the family back into a routine etc.  We decided as a family that we all wanted to adopt a baby.  Max and Avery are so eager to be a big brother and big sister.  They have written letters to you in this book.  We asked the kids to write to you from their heart and to be as honest as possible.  We hope you enjoy reading them!

We live in a suburb outside the city of Chicago.  We live in a community that was designed for all types of families.  We have many, many beautiful parks and playgrounds, a clubhouse with 3 different types of swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, walking trail, sledding hill and ice skating park.   Our elementary and middle schools were built for our community.  Both are within walking distance of our house.  We designed our home with a big family in mind!   Our yard is usually filled with neighborhood kids playing together.  We are surrounded by wonderful families that we consider our extended family.  Several other families have been blessed with adopting, there’s lots of diversity in our neighborhood.  We have lived here for almost six years and we hope to be here at least another sixty!

We'd like to thank you for taking the time to get to know our family.  While looking through our book, we hope that you will be able to see how much love we have to give another child.  We are an energetic family that loves to travel, be outdoors and we would love to include your child in all the wonderful activities we do.

We embrace open adoption and think it is a wonderful way to celebrate the never ending love of a mother.   We wish you all the happiness in your future; please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

All the best,

Peter, Barbara, Max and Avery
